Calcium is a key element for normal growth and complete bone development. Our body stores large quantities of calcium and magnesium, and an important quantity of these is found in the bones (in the case of calcium the majority). In particular, calcium is present in the human body in a percentage of 2,5%. 99% of the calcium contained in the body is found in bone tissue, but the remaining 1% still performs important functions. Calcium is essential for muscle contraction and in the conduction of the nerve impulse in the central nervous system, activates many enzymes, enters the composition of the active form of vitamin D and is important in the transport of substances across cell membranes. Since it has a recalcifying effect, it is used in cases of rickets, pulmonary tuberculosis and bone diseases. The importance of preventing osteoporosis (a disease that causes bone fragility responsible for many fractures in old age) is fundamental if we consider that for about 75% of the population the daily dose of calcium is lower than the recommended one (1 g in the adult).

Magnesium is a mineral responsible for many essential metabolic processes. In particular, it plays a main role in the activation of amino acids for protein biosynthesis, in the formation of urea, in the transmission of muscle impulses, in nerve transmission and in cellular electrical stability. Magnesium, in addition to being vital for the production and transport of energy, allows muscle relaxation and is directly related to the state of the arterial walls. Therefore in case of deficiency of the same, the arteries contract making it difficult for blood circulation. Finally, magnesium regulates the amount of calcium that enters the cells thus controlling the vital functions of the organism as well as the heart rhythm.
