Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) has been widely demonstrated to reduce body fat and at the same time promote muscle growth. It is a natural free fatty acid found in small quantities especially in meat and dairy products. And since the organism cannot synthesize this acid to obtain an adequate quantity of it, it is essential to proceed with an external contribution.
Conjugated linoleic acid reduces body fat by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme lipoprotein lipasa (LPL). This enzyme transfers fats from the bloodstream to the fat cells. With CLA, its activity is decreased, resulting in a significant reduction in the accumulated adipose tissue (lipolysis). CLA also increases the activity of the enzyme carnitine palmytoyltransferase (CPT), an enzyme present in the muscles and responsible for the transport of fatty acids to the mitochondria. Energy is produced in the mitochondria and excess fat is used for this purpose, i.e. as a fuel for energy production. If therefore the activity of CPT in the muscle increases, the transport of fat to the mitochondria increases. And the greater amount of fat that reaches the mitochondria is converted into energy.
